A 16-strong Tasmanian Trampoline Gymnastics Team will contest the 2011 Australian National Trampoline Gymnastics Championships in Adelaide next week.

TIS Elite Development Program member for Trampoline Gymnastics, Aidan Collins, is a favourite for a podium finish in Adelaide. Collins is the reigning Under 15 Men’s National Champion for Double-Mini Tramp and is aiming to defend this title next week. Collins will also represent Australia in the Trans-Tasman Challenge against New Zealand, which will coincide with the National Championships. State Coach, Ben Kelly, is confident that Collins will rise to the challenge and perform well next week.

Hobart’s Hugh McConnell is also a favourite for a podium finish. McConnell will compete in the Under 15 and Junior International events for Individual Trampoline, Double-Mini, and Synchronised Trampoline. McConnell recently outscored his opponents in the final World Championship trial in Hobart and is preparing well for this next event. Although young, Kelly believes McConnell (14) have the ability to perform well and finish within the top 6 of the Junior International competition.

In the Senior International event, Damien Axelsen will be out to impress selectors in the Senior International Men’s Double-Mini event. This will serve as the final trial for a place in the Australian Team to contest World Open Championships in England in November. Axelsen has recently returned from injury, but is preparing well ahead of the competition. A notable exception from the senior event is reigning National Champion and TIS Scholarship Holder, Jack Penny, who is currently rehabilitating after a recent fall at the World Cup in China. Penny is two-times National Champion in Men’s Double-Mini and is ranked 5th in the world. Penny will attend the competition in an official capacity, judging both the international and age group events.

Other Tasmanian representatives at this National Age and Open competition include: Mikeala Lunn, Patrick Schluter (Under 11), Khya Clark, Ebony Denholm, Matthew French, Josh Hedley-Williams, Blair Kirkpatrick, Alex Pugh-Harris (Under 13), Makonnen Brown, Ryan Williams (Under 15/Junior), Rose Bowerman, Musashi Ledger (Under 17), and Matthew Gough (17+/Senior).
