A successful weekend of Tasmanian Athletes showcasing their Trampolining skills...

The Tasmanian State Age and Elite Trampoline Championships were held in Launceston over
the weekend, with over 50 of the states best Trampoline Gymnasts taking part. This
competition was the final selection trial for the National Age Championships being held at
Sydney Olympic Park in May.

In the Junior International Men's events, national squad members Hugh McConnell (Hobart)
and Aiden Collins (Launceston) did not disappoint as they battled it out for the honour of
Junior Men's Champion. McConnell who placed 5th at the World Age Championships last
year in Birmingham prevailed in the Individual Trampoline event, narrowly winning the
competition from Collins. State Coach, Ben Kelly, was impressed with McConnell's
performances noting that his exceptional jumping height for a junior competitor and near
flawless performances helped him to win the competition. The tables were turned, however,
in the Junior International Men's Double-Mini event, where Collins was a clear winner over
his opponents, including McConnell.

In the Senior International events, TIS scholarship holder, Jack Penny, was forced to
withdraw due a recent heel injury sustained during training in the week leading up to the
event. Team mate, Damien Axelsen, however, performed strongly and was crowned Senior
International Men's Double-Mini Champion. Axelsen who has also recently returned from
injury was impressive on the Double-Mini scoring the highest preliminary result from all
competitors over the weekend. Axelsen now has his sights on being selected onto the
Australian team to contest the Indo-Pacific Championships in Sydney in October.

The most impressive performance in the age divisions was undoubtedly Launceston's
Makonnen Brown who won all four Under 15 titles including Individual Trampoline,
Synchronised Trampoline, Double-Mini Tramp, and Tumbling. Kelly describes Brown as
having a promising future, and a strong competitor who displays exceptional consistency
with good technique.

Other trampoline gymnasts who performed well over the weekend include dual and triple
state champions; Tim Wilson (Under 11 Champion Individual and Double-Mini), Blair
Kirkpatrick (Under 15 Champion Individual and Double-Mini), and Matthew French (Under
13 Champion Individual, Double-Mini, Synchronised Trampoline)

The Tasmanian team selected for the International divisions at National Championships
include Jack Penny and Damien Axelsen in the Senior events, while Makonnen Brown, Aiden
Collins, Hugh McConnell, and Ryan Williams will compete in the Junior divisions. A further
10 gymnasts will compete in the Age Championships
